The Smoke

Sura 44 of the Quran which is titled Al-Dhukan (means The Smoke) in some of its verses that talk about how distinctive Smoke (probably covering the whole World) that will be brought forth by God as a punishment.

''So wait for the day when the sky will bring forth clearly-identifiable smoke, enveloping people: this will be a painful chastisement.''   Sura Dhukan (Smoke) 44: 10-11

‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏أَبُو خَيْثَمَةَ زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ‏ ‏وَإِسْحَقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ‏ ‏وَابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ الْمَكِّيُّ ‏ ‏وَاللَّفْظُ ‏ ‏لِزُهَيْرٍ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏ ‏إِسْحَقُ ‏ ‏أَخْبَرَنَا ‏ ‏و قَالَ ‏ ‏الْآخَرَانِ ‏ ‏حَدَّثَنَا ‏ ‏سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏فُرَاتٍ الْقَزَّازِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏أَبِي الطُّفَيْلِ ‏ ‏عَنْ ‏ ‏حُذَيْفَةَ بْنِ أَسِيدٍ الْغِفَارِيِّ ‏ ‏قَالَ ‏
‏اطَّلَعَ النَّبِيُّ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏عَلَيْنَا وَنَحْنُ نَتَذَاكَرُ فَقَالَ مَا ‏ ‏تَذَاكَرُونَ قَالُوا نَذْكُرُ السَّاعَةَ قَالَ إِنَّهَا ‏ ‏لَنْ تَقُومَ حَتَّى تَرَوْنَ قَبْلَهَا عَشْرَ ‏ ‏آيَاتٍ ‏ ‏فَذَكَرَ الدُّخَانَ ‏ ‏وَالدَّجَّالَ ‏ ‏وَالدَّابَّةَ وَطُلُوعَ الشَّمْسِ مِنْ مَغْرِبِهَا وَنُزُولَ ‏ ‏عِيسَى ابْنِ مَرْيَمَ ‏ ‏صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ‏ ‏وَيَأَجُوجَ ‏ ‏وَمَأْجُوجَ ‏ ‏وَثَلَاثَةَ خُسُوفٍ خَسْفٌ بِالْمَشْرِقِ وَخَسْفٌ بِالْمَغْرِبِ وَخَسْفٌ بِجَزِيرَةِ ‏ ‏الْعَرَبِ ‏ ‏وَآخِرُ ذَلِكَ نَارٌ تَخْرُجُ مِنْ ‏ ‏الْيَمَنِ ‏ ‏تَطْرُدُ النَّاسَ إِلَى مَحْشَرِهِمْ

Huzaifa bin Usaid Al-Ghifari reported that Allah's Messenger  صلى الله عليه وسلم  showed up as we were talking. He said: "What are you talking about?" We said: "We are talking about the Last Hour." Thereupon, he صلى الله عليه وسلم  said: "It will not come until you see ten signs before it, He made a mention of the Smoke, the Dajjal (Anti-Christ), the Daabba, the Rising of the Sun from the West, the Descent of Jesus Son of Mary عليه السلام  (from Heaven), the emergence of Ya'juj and Ma'juj (Gog & MaGog), and Khusuf (Landslides) will occur in three places, One in the East, one in the West and one in Arabian Peninsula, at the end of which, a Fire will burn forth from Yemen (or from Aden according to Ahmad), which drives people to the place of their final assembly."  (Sahih Muslim, Musnad Ahmad)

روى الإمام أحمد في مسنده عن أبي هريرة أن رسول الله صلى الله علية وسلم ، قال :  بادروا بالأعمال ستا : طلوع الشمس من مغربها ، والدجال ، والدخان ودابة الأرض ، وخاصة  أحدكم ، و أمر العامة  

جاء عند ابن ماجة
[4056 ]ــ قال حدثنا حرملة بن يحيى : حدثنا عبدالله بن وهب . أخبرني عمرو بن الحارث وابن لهيعة عن يزيد بن أبي حبيب ، عن سنان بن سعد، عن أنس بن مالك ، عن رسول الله صلى الله علية وسلم قال : ( بادروا بالأعمال ستاً : طلوع الشمس من مغربها ، والدخان ، ودابة الأرض ، والدجال ، وخويصة أحدكم ، وأمر العامة)

Abu Huraira said The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم  said, "Hasten to do good deeds before six things happen: the rising of the sun from the West, the Smoke, the Dajjal, the Daabba (Beast), the (death) of one of you or general tribulation." (Sahih Muslim)
 

وخرجه الثعلبي أيضا عن حذيفة قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: (أول الآيات خروجا الدجال ونزول عيسى ابن مريم ونار تخرج من قعر عدن أبين تسوق الناس إلى المحشر تبيت معهم حيث باتوا وتقيل معهم إذا قالوا وتصبح معهم إذا أصبحوا وتمسي معهم إذا أمسوا). قلت: يا نبي الله، وما الدخان ؟ قال هذه الآية: "ارتقب يوم تأتي السماء بدخان مبين" يملأ ما بين المشرق والمغرب يمكث أربعين يوما وليلة أما المؤمن فيصيبه منه شبه الزكام والكافر فيكون بمنزلة السكران يخرج الدخان من فمه ومنخره وعينيه وأذنه ودبره).

وأخرج ابن أبي حاتم عن أبي سعيد الخدري أن رسول الله قال
" يهيج الدخان بالناس فأما المؤمن فيأخذه كالزكمة وأما الكافر فينفخه حتى يخرج من كل مسمع منه "
 

وقال ابن جرير أيضا حدثني محمد بن عوف حدثنا محمد بن إسماعيل بن عياش حدثني أبي حدثني ضمضم بن زرعة عن شريح بن عبيد عن أبي مالك الأشعري رضي الله عنه قال : قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم " إن ربكم أنذركم ثلاثا الدخان يأخذ المؤمن كالزكمة ويأخذ الكافر فينتفخ حتى يخرج من كل مسمع منه والثانية الدابة والثالثة الدجال " ورواه الطبراني عن هاشم بن يزيد عن محمد بن إسماعيل بن عياش به وهذا إسناد جيد

It is clearly evident from the above verse and Hadiths (narrated by Ibn Jarir Tabari, etc.) that the smoke is a major sign of Qiyamah (Day of Resurrection). It will rise and cover the whole world. The Smoke will affect both the believers and non-believers alike remaining for a period of 40 days and night. The believers will be affected a little as if suffering from common cold, while the Smoke will enter the brains of the non-believers and make them unconscious.

Ibn Masood's Opinion

Ibn Masood's (r.a.) strongly contends that the Smoke mentioned in the Smoke Sura (Chapter 44) is not the same smoke mentioned by the Prophet  صلى الله عليه وسلم as one of the signs of Qiyamah (Day of Resurrection).

عن مسروق عن عبد الله قال خمس قد مضين الدخان واللزام والروم والبطشة والقمر

Masrook reported that Abdullah Ibn Masood said: " Five things (signs) have passed: the Smoke, the inevitable,  Romans' (victory against Persians), the chastisement, and (Prophet Mohammad's صلى الله عليه وسلم splitting of) the Moon." (Sahih Muslim & Bukhari)

حدثنا إسحق بن إبراهيم أخبرنا جرير عن منصور عن أبي الضحى عن مسروق قال

فإن الله عز وجل قال لنبيه صلى الله عليه وسلم

قل ما أسألكم عليه من أجر وما أنا من المتكلفين

إن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لما رأى من الناس إدبارا فقال اللهم سبع كسبع يوسف قال فأخذتهم سنة حصت كل شيء حتى أكلوا الجلود والميتة من الجوع وينظر إلى السماء أحدهم فيرى كهيئة الدخان فأتاه أبو سفيان فقال يا محمد إنك جئت تأمر بطاعة الله وبصلة الرحم وإن قومك قد هلكوا فادع الله لهم قال الله عز وجل

فارتقب يوم تأتي السماء بدخان مبين يغشى الناس هذا عذاب أليم

  إلى قوله إنكم عائدون

قال أفيكشف عذاب الآخرة

يوم نبطش البطشة الكبرى إنا منتقمون

فالبطشة يوم بدر وقد مضت آية الدخان والبطشة واللزام وآية الروم

Firstly, it should be noted that Ibn Kathir writes in his book Al-Bidaya wa An-Nihaya that from amongst the Sahaba, Ibn Masood is the only one that holds this view. The majority of Muslim scholars in the light of the above and many other Ahadith are of the opinion that the Smoke referred to in the verse is the smoke is among the awaited signs that will precede Qiyamah. This has also been related as being the opinion of Ibn Abbas and Imam Ali. 

قال ابن أبي حاتم حدثنا أبي حدثنا عبد الله بن صالح بن مسلم حدثنا إسرائيل عن أبي إسحاق عن الحارث عن علي رضي الله عنه قال : لم تمض آية الدخان بعد يأخذ المؤمن كهيئة الزكام وتنفخ الكافر حتى ينفذ

Imam Ali  رضي الله عنه said, "The verse of Dukhan (Smoke) has not taken place yet..."   (Ibn Abi Hatim)

Ibn Abbas, Ibn Umar, Hasan, and others said, ''The smoke referred to in the verses is the smoke before Qiyamah which will enter in the ears of the Kuffar and the hypocrites and will affect the Muslims like a common cold. The whole World will be like a house on fire. It has not happened. It will happen.'' (Muhammad ibn Ahmad AsSaffarini's book Lawami Al-Anwaar Al-Bahiyya)

قال ابن جرير حدثني يعقوب حدثنا ابن علية عن ابن جريج عن عبد الله بن أبي مليكة قال غدوت على ابن عباس رضي الله عنهما ذات يوم فقال ما نمت الليلة حتى أصبحت قلت لم ؟ قال : قالوا طلع الكوكب ذو الذنب فخشيت أن يكون الدخان قد طرق فما نمت حتى أصبحت

Abdullah bin Abu-Mulaika narrated that "I went one morning to Ibn Abbas. He said, 'I didn't sleep all night.' I asked, 'Why?' He replied, 'They informed me that a star with a tail appeared. I feared that the Smoke may follow and thus I didn't sleep till it was morning'.''  (Tabari, Ibn Kathir)

Secondly, Ibn Kathir writes that Ibn Masood doesn't attribute what he has said to the Prophet  صلى الله عليه وسلم  (meaning Ibn Masood was stating his own opinion, not what Prophet Mohammad said) while the hadith that the Smoke is from among the awaited signs is attributed back to the Prophet  صلى الله عليه وسلم  . ''What (Hadith) is attributed to the Prophet  صلى الله عليه وسلم  has to be given a higher rank over what is not.''  (Ibn Kathir's book Al-Bidaya wa An-Nihaya)
