        DiscoveringIslam.org's  Interpretation of

The Prophecy of Daniel 9 in the Bible

We, at DiscoveringIslam.org, are proud to present to you our interpretation of this famous prophecy in the Bible that Christians interpret that it refers to only Jesus. The following is the text of the prophecy as it appears in King James version and New International version of the Bible:

Daniel 9: 24-27 (King James version)

24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.

25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublesome times.

26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.

27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week, he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

Daniel 9:24-27  (New International version)

"Seventy 'sevens'  are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy. Know and understand this: From the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven sevens, and sixty-two 'sevens.' It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble. After the sixty-two sevens, the Anointed One will be cut off and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed. He will confirm a covenant with many for one 'seven'. In the middle of the 'seven' he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on a wing of the temple, he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him."

                                                                    -------------------------------------------------------------

Christians' Interpretation of this Prophecy:

Christians divide the "seventy sevens" into 2 segments (70 = 69 + 1 ). Therefore, they say: (69 x 7 ) + ( 1 x 7) = 483 + 7 = 490 years. They believe the first 483 years have already been fulfilled by the first coming of Jesus. Christians are expecting the remaining 7 years to be the last 7 years of tribulation before Jesus come back.

According to the prophecy, from the decree to rebuild Jerusalem, there would be seven seven-year periods and sixty-two more seven-year periods, meaning  (7 x 7) + (62 x 7) = 49 + 434 = 483 years, until the Messiah would show up.

After the culmination of the 62 seven-year periods, or after 483rd year, the Messiah would be cut off.

Both the ancient Hebrews to whom Daniel was writing and the ancient Babylonians  (Daniel  supposedly lived in Babylon during the latter half of the 6th century BC) used a 360-day year.

So, 483 years x 360 days = 173,880 days. This is the equivalent of 476 years and 25 days using our modern Gregorian calendar’s 365.24219879-day year.

As for our starting point, the Persian Emperor Artaxerxes Longimanus (who ruled Persia from 464-424 BC) issued the edict to rebuild Jerusalem sometime during the Hebrew month of Nisan in the 20th year of his reign, or 444 BC . The month of Nisan fell between February 27 (Nisan 1) and March 28 (Nisan 30) of that year according to our modern Gregorian calendar.

Now, 173,880 days from February 27 - March 28, 444 BC, lands us at March 24 - April 22, 33 AD.

According to some Christian scholars, Jesus was born about 4000 years after Adam. Luke 3:21-23 tells us that Jesus was about thirty years old when he began his public ministry. The bible seems to indicate that his ministry lasted about three years. However, some Christian scholars believe that Jesus' preaching the Gospel, in his first coming, lasted only about seventy seven weeks, meaning 490 days, based on Daniel 9:24.

According to this prophecy, the Messiah would show up, present Himself as Messiah to the nation and then be “cut off” some time between March 24 and April 22, AD 33. Jesus Christ presented Himself to the nation of Israel on Palm Sunday, March 27, was crucified (according to the beliefs of Christians) four days later on April 1, or “Preparation Day” (the annual day on which the Passover Lamb was slain), and rose from the dead (according to the beliefs of Christians) on Sunday, April 3, AD 33, all within our 30-day range of dates.

The prophecy then goes on to say that subsequent to the Messiah being “cut off,” “the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary.” Within one generation of Christ’s crucifixion, Titus razed Jerusalem and destroyed the temple.

                                                                   ---------------------------------------------------------------

Our Islamic interpretation of this prophecy is as follows:

Interpreting Verse 25's seven (7) sevens

Verse 25 says that the Anointed One will come after seven sevens (or weeks) from the decree to re-build Jerusalem . Jerusalem was captured by Israel in 6-day war that started in June 6 1967. So, the seven sevens (weeks)  could be 7 x 7 years = 49 years  from June 7, 1967. This means: 1967+ 49 years =  2016

Interpreting Verse 25's  62 sevens (weeks) (or "three-score and two weeks")

Most Christians interpret verse 25 to mean 62 sevens (or weeks). However, we at DiscoveringIslam.org have examined the verse carefully , especially King James version which says "three-score and two weeks" and came to the following conclusions. A "score" means 20 years,  so three-score means: 20 + 20 + 20 = 60 years. On the other hand, "two weeks" can be interpreted as 2 x 7 years = 14 years. We also believe that the decree to rebuild and restore  Jerusalem could be viewed as having started when Israel was created in 1948. Therefore, the period is : 1948 + (60 years + 14 years) = 1948 + 74 years = 2022 AD which is the year in which we expect that the last Kingdom of Israel to end, based on our numerical analysis of the Quran (www.EndTimesBook.com).

Other Observations

Notice that the decree to re-build Jerusalem by the Persian Emperor Artaxerxes Longimanus was in 444 BC. We expect the last Kingdom of Israel, under the leadership of the Dajjal, to end in 1444 Hijri .
